How to Lose Weight in a Diet Plateau
Dieting, exercising, and being healthier—losing weight takes a lot of work.
However, fitting more comfortably into your favorite jeans more than makes the whole process worth it.
Unfortunately, almost every dieter eventually hits a plateau, where despite your best efforts you don’t seem to be losing any more weight.
A lot of times this feeling can make you want to give up—but don’t.
Fight the Plateau
In order to get past your weight loss plateau, there are several things you can incorporate into your diet and workout routines to find the right way to get your body back on track.
1. Change your workout.
If you hit the elliptical regularly and lost weight at first but now the same workout doesn’t seem to do any good for your body, switch things up. You may be spending a good amount of time working out, but it’s not doing your body as much good. Plateaus happen because your body is becoming used to your exercise routines and isn’t working as hard.
Try switching to a spinning class, or an aerobics class, or try adding in muscle-building and toning routines in the middle of your elliptical workout. Work your muscles in a different way and incorporate muscles that aren’t used to being worked so hard.
2. Add Difficulty
Whether you change your aerobic exercise or not, try adding in some resistance. This could mean adding weights to your aerobics class, adding a higher resistance on the treadmill or bike, or using a higher step in a step class. Get past your plateau by changing up your routines.
3. Add more activity throughout your day.
This doesn’t mean you need to plan on hitting the gym morning and night, it just means if you work out in the morning, try adding in a brisk walk at night, or try walking more at work (if at all possible). Look for ways to be more active.
4. Watch the calories.
Check your diet, and try decreasing about 100 more calories a day. It’s surprising how easy calories can sneak back into your diet. Try being more vigilant in preventing these sneaky little things from getting past your lips.
However, if you’re already at 1200 calories or fewer, don’t go any lower. Eating fewer than 1200 calories a day can do more harm than good as it keeps you feeling hungry all day which causes you to overeat and your body to metabolize muscle instead of fat.
5. Tweak your diet a bit.
Staying healthy should always be the main focus, but you can always try adding in extra protein instead of some of your carbohydrates, or vice versa. Get out of your dietary routines. Add more fruit to your breakfast, or eat all fruit, instead of the whole grain toast.
